Lim Lab

My research combines one of my favorite activities - SLEEP - and the disease I fear the most - CANCER.

I have 2 areas of research:

1. LUNG CANCER: We are a TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH LAB that utilizes clinically relevant mouse models of sleep apnea and lung cancer. We study the effect of cyclical intermittent hypoxia, the underlying pathology of obstructive sleep apnea, on the immune system and its subsequent effect on lung cancer progression and metastases.

2. SLEEP: We aim to develop NOVEL BIOMARKERS OF SLEEP including physiological, neuroimaging and blood biomarkers (currently, only clinically) using Machine Learning approaches. Eventually we hope to extend our work to mice to understand the mechanisms underlying these biomarkers.

Philosophy of RESEARCH

PRECISION MEDICINE My overarching goal is to personalize how we diagnose and treat diseases for the individual. We want to ask the big questions in Medicine and be the bridge to Basic Science, Engineering and Clinical Trials to shift how we think about health and disease. We embrace all forms of technology (e.g., wearables, next-gen imaging), -OMICS (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics), and machine learning to deliver precision medicine.

TEAM SCIENCE Precision medicine requires excellent collaboration with basic scientists, clinicians and computational engineers. I am fortunate to work with wonderful collaborators to (1) understand cancer drug resistance using a machine learning approach and (2) develop novel blood, physiological and imaging “biomarkers” of sleep and sleep disorders.

Philosophy of MENTORSHIP

Training the Next Generation of Physician-Scientists I am fortunate to have the best mentors and believe in paying it forward. Thus, one of my major career goals Is to train the next generation of translational physician-scientists as quickly as possible and teaming them up with brilliant basic scientists, clever computational engineers and dedicated clinical researchers.

WOMEN in Science I am eager to mentor anyone that wants to pursue a career in translational research, however, I would like to send a special shout out to all of the women out there —- we have a unique way to contribute to science and encourage you to join us!

Lab Openings

Please contact us if you are interested in joining the lab.

Job Opening, Lab Manager Must be able to perform and teach many basic science techniques and mouse husbandry/surgeries as well as maintain all regulatory IACUC and IRB protocols

Job Opening, Research Associate, Level 2

Undergraduate & Graduate Students, Residents & Fellows, Post-docs We are seeking energetic and hard-working lab members with a high level of integrity. It is preferable if you commit to a minimum of 2 years, but if this is not possible, let us discuss your options. Must be older than 18 years old.
